Ashanti Region: Four bodies recovered from Wednesday’s flood waters
Tragic incidents have occurred in various parts of the Ashanti Region following heavy rainfall on Wednesday. As a result of separate incidents, four individuals have drowned, and their bodies have now been recovered.
On Wednesday night, three people lost their lives due to drowning in different locations. These locations include Atafoa, Sepaase, and Tafo. The situation took a further heartbreaking turn when the brother of one of the victims from the Atafoa incident also drowned during a rescue attempt on Thursday.
Collaborative efforts involving officials from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the National Fire Service, and members of the affected communities were instrumental in recovering the bodies of the victims.
Frank Duodu, the Ashanti Regional Director of NADMO, has described the rainfall on Wednesday as the heaviest in four months. He expressed the difficulties faced during the rescue operations, highlighting four tragic drownings that occurred. In Tafo, a six-year-old boy was swept away while trying to retrieve his ball. Atafoa witnessed the loss of a forty-seven-year-old man who was washed away along with his bicycle. In Sepaase, another man was carried away while attempting to navigate the flooded waters with his motorbike.
Tragically, the elder brother of the victim from Atafoa also lost his life after entering the waters in an attempt to recover his brother’s body.
These incidents serve as a poignant reminder of the dangers posed by heavy rains and the importance of exercising caution during such weather conditions. Our thoughts are with the families and communities affected by these devastating events.
