ASHGHAL organizes debate on the merits and demerits of multilingualism in Ghanaian education at University of Education Winneba Ajumako Campus

The Association of Ghanaian Languages (ASHGHAL) at the University of Education Winneba Ajumako Campus is set to hold an inter-departmental debate on the topic “The problem of multilingual in Ghanaian Education exceeds its benefits”. The debate, which is scheduled to hold on the 6th of April 2023 at the Assembly Hall, will feature the four language departments in the university; Akan-Nzema, Ewe, Gur-Gonja, and Ga-Dangme.

The event is expected to provide a platform for students and faculty members to critically examine the challenges and benefits of multilingualism in Ghanaian education. Participants will argue for or against the motion and defend their positions using empirical evidence, data, and real-life examples.

According to Prof. Samuel A. Issah, the Chief Patron and Dean of Faculty, the debate promises to be an exciting and enlightening event, as it will provide an opportunity for students and faculty members to engage in healthy intellectual discourse.

Dr. Akwasi Adomako, the HOD of the Akan-Nzema department, expressed his excitement about the upcoming event and encouraged all students to attend and actively participate in the debate.

Similarly, Emmanuel Dogbey, the HOD of the Ewe department, said that the debate would be an excellent opportunity for students to showcase their critical thinking and persuasive skills.

The HODs of the Ga-Dangme and Gur-Gonja departments, Dr. Abraham K Bisilki, and Dr. Abdul Rahaman, respectively, also expressed their support for the event, noting that it would promote the use of Ghanaian languages in education.

The event is open to all members of the university community, and guests are expected to be present, including faculty members from other departments, students, and members of the general public. The debate will commence at 2:00 pm, and attendees are advised to be punctual.
