Bawumia: Mahama will not be able to implement Free SHS, which revolutionized the North.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has declared that if former President John Mahama had still been in power, the Free Senior High School (SHS) program would not have had the revolutionary effect that it has in the North and throughout Ghana.

Speaking to a sizable assembly in Jirapa on his campaign trip of the Upper West Region, Dr. Bawumia stressed the important advantages that the Free SHS program has provided to many Northern households since its launch in 2017.

He held former President Mahama accountable for his opposition to the strategy, given its benefits to both the country and the region.

“Former President Mahama declared that he will not fund free SHS education with his own money. It wasn’t a priority, he said. However, we have brought it, and Ghanaians and the people in the North are benefiting,” Dr. Bawumia said amid thunderous applause from the assembly.

“We knew, and I knew, that where we had the poorest people in the North, we needed Free SHS education,” he said, pointing out the enrollment surge. We introduced Free SHS to Ghana and the North, where a large proportion of our kids are enrolled.

In just seven years, the number of students enrolled in senior high school has grown from 800,000 to 1.4 million. It indicates that the desire for free SHS education was strong among our people.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the five northern regions currently have the highest rates of senior high school enrolment. However, John Mahama advised against doing this. He reiterated, “He said he wouldn’t do it if he had the money.”

Along with accusing former President Mahama of squandering funds in the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) project, the Vice President also voiced criticism.

“We all witnessed what transpired when he established up SADA. We all know what happened to the millions of dollars he claimed to have invested. I’ve challenged him to present us with a single SADA project, but he hasn’t done so. There isn’t one to demonstrate.

In contrasting his record with Mahama’s, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the development initiatives and policies that, as Vice President, he had enabled and that had benefited both Ghana and the North.
