Police have detained a cocoa farmer from Wiredukrom, a rural village in the Mpohor District of the Western Region, who allegedly killed his wife during an early morning fight last Tuesday.
Egya Ata, 38, is currently in police custody.
Three of their children, ages one to five years, were there when the incident occurred, which is alleged to have occurred at 6 a.m.
Egya Atta hurried to his brother’s house with blood stains on his shirt, reporting that his wife, Ama Gifty, had rather assaulted him.
The brother arrived on the scene and saw the wife’s lifeless body on the ground.
The Nkosuohene of Wiredukron, Nana Promise Essilfie, told Graphic Online’s Dotsey Koblah Aklorbortu that the deceased and husband had been cohabiting and have yet to be legally married, despite the fact that they have three children.
Ama, a food seller, stated on Tuesday morning that she would be unable to prepare breakfast for the family since she was already late in traveling to the nearby Kojokrom Market to buy food items for her business.
She went out to get porridge (koko) for the kids around 6:30 a.m.
When she returned to the house with the oatmeal, there was a scuffle in their room, and Ata allegedly refused to allow her go.
According to Nana Essilfie of Graphic Online, after reportedly killing the wife, Ata rushed to his brother’s house in a neighbouring hamlet wearing a bloodied shirt and telling him that the wife had assaulted him.
The brother raced to Ata’s house and discovered Ama’s lifeless body, with her children wailing and shouting out her name.
When the brother returned to confront Ata, he discovered that he had burned his blood-stained shirt and changed into one of the brother’s shirts before fleeing the house.
After a few hours, he returned to his brother’s house in the evening and informed him he was willing to offer him his cocoa farm to run provided he helped him escape.
According to Nana Essilfie, the brother pretended to be interested before sneaking out to tell the police.
