Don’t divert €350k allocated for Afram roads elsewhere – MP tells govt

The 350 million euros allocated by the government for the construction of a road and bridge in her district have drawn the ire of Betty Efua Krosbi Mensah, the member of parliament for Afram Plains North.

The MP claims that the administration has suggested using the money for more Accra-Kumasi motorway building.

The congressman claimed in a press conference that the change would have an impact on the region’s ability to produce food.

“We are very sorry to inform you that the government intends to divert this sizable sum of money from building the Adawso to Ekye-Amanfrom route. The funds are now being allocated or redistributed for the Accra-Kumasi road’s construction.

“As the MPs who represent the residents of Afram Plains, we find this situation to be quite upsetting. Afram Plains North MP bemoaned, “Government enlisted why it prioritizes Afram Plains, knowing quite well that it is one of the country’s food basket communities or districts and that it was an opportunity to expose the Afram Plains to the rest of the country.

The construction of a bridge over the Afram River and 124 kilometers of roads from Adawso to Bunso, Ekye to Amanfrom, and other specified highways inside the Afram districts will cost 350,000,000 euros, which was approved by parliament in 2022.

Kennedy Osei Nyarko, the committee chairman, gave a presentation of the committee’s report on roads and transportation, noting that the government acknowledges the crucial role that accessibility to road infrastructure plays in reducing poverty, promoting regional integration, and advancing economic development through income-generating activities connected to agriculture and other areas of the economy.
