IGP to appear before ‘leaked tape’ committee on Tuesday

Dr. George Akuffo Dampare is anticipated to come before the committee on Tuesday, September 12, according to Samuel Atta Akyea, the chairman of the seven-member ad hoc committee looking into the attempt to unseat the Inspector General of Police.

All three senior police officers who have already testified before the committee, COP Alex Mensah, Superintendent George Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi, are anticipated to return with their attorneys on Tuesday, September 12.

“The IGP himself should also come with his lawyers,” the speaker added, referring to the most well-known person whose name had been mentioned.

Although the details of some significant accusations have been made public, the accusations themselves have not. Franklin Cudjoe, the president of the policy think group IMANI Africa, claims that the committee’s work should have come to an end when the witnesses admitted that their voices were on the recording.

On Saturday, Mr. Cudjoe said in an interview on The Big Issue on Citi TV in Accra, “What is happening initially, obviously I thought was a waste of everybody’s time because the three men involved have confessed to having their voices and then to some of the things that were attributed to them, they said yes. The committee’s task was finished for me there.

He questioned why the committee was promoting “storytelling” from the witnesses, especially the police officers, and how this was resulting in a gradual revision of the mandate of the Ghana Police Service.

“I don’t know why the committee chairman is entertaining storytelling and then we all of a sudden we are into some circles of comedy of errors,” he said.
