IGP to appear before ‘leaked tape’ committee today

Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police, is scheduled to appear before the committee investigating the attempt to depose him today, Tuesday, September 12.

All three senior police officials accused in the leaked recording plotting the removal of the IGP – COP Alex Mensah, Superintendent George Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi – who have previously testified before the committee are set to return with their lawyers on Tuesday, September 12.

“Also, the IGP himself, the most prominent person whose name has been bandied about, should come with his lawyers.”

“Some serious allegations have been made public, but their substance has not been made public.” That is to say, the evidential support for such charges is what we will unearth, so we will use our discretion as to which piece of evidence we will provide to the public that would not jeopardize national security,” Committee Chairman Atta Akyea told Joy News.

Meanwhile, Franklin Cudjoe, President of the policy think group IMANI Africa, believes the committee’s work should have finished when the witnesses admitted to having their voices on the tape.

Mr. Cudjoe said on Saturday’s episode of The Big Issue on Citi TV in Accra, “What is happening initially, obviously, I thought was a waste of everybody’s time because the three men involved have confessed to having their voices and then to some of the things that were attributed to them, they said yes.” The committee’s work stopped there for me.”

He questioned why the committee was encouraging “storytelling” from witnesses, particularly police officials, which was eventually leading to a reconsideration of the mandate of the Ghana Police Service.

“I’m not sure why the committee chairman is entertaining storytelling and then we all of a sudden we’re in some comedy of errors circles,” he explained.
