In the general elections of 2024, vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has vowed to deliver the National Democratic Congress (NDC) a “showdown” in its strongholds.
According to him, the NDC was afraid he would become the leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) since it was aware of his competitive edge over it, particularly in its strongholds, such as the Zongo communities and the Volta Region.
On Saturday, while conducting a campaign tour around the area, Dr. Bawumia addressed party supporters in the Oti Region.
“Residents of Zongo areas claim they don’t believe the NPP will ever choose Dr. Bawumia to be their candidate in the future national elections in 2024. We will cast a large number of votes for Bawumia, nevertheless, if they do bring him. If Bawumia wins the nomination, the NDC will suffer severe defeats in its two bastions, the North and the Zongo communities.
“I will also increase the number of NPP votes cast in the Volta Region. I will thus shake all of their fortresses. The NDC does not want Dr. Bawumia to become the flagbearer for this reason. They are aware that I would confront them in their strongholds because I am the flagbearer, he said.
Abraham Amaliba, the NDC’s director of conflict resolution, has stated that the party is not frightened of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and will not be alarmed if he is chosen to lead the ruling New Patriotic Party.
He claimed that if Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen had been chosen as the NPP’s standard bearer, the NDC would have been terrified.
Amaliba stated in an interview for Citi TV’s news analysis show The Big Issue on Saturday that Dr. Bawumia is the person the NDC is least afraid of. In actuality, Alan would have frightened us more than Bawumia. Indeed, if Bawumia wins, it will be lot simpler for us to win than if it were Alan Kyerematen.
