Minority MPs protest the confirmation of two Supreme Court nominees.
The approval of Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu and Justice George Kingsley Koomson as nominees to the Supreme Court has been opposed by the minority in Parliament.
The caucus argued that Justice Gaewu was unqualified to sit on the bench of the supreme court because he was running for parliament on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ticket.
Muntaka Mubarak, a former Minority Chief Whip and representative for Asawase, asserted that the House will suffer if he is approved. When you create a negative precedent, it becomes the benchmark for others to make the same demand in the future.
The Minority insisted that Mr. George Koomson “just joined the Court of Appeal” and that other capable and qualified justices could have been promoted to the Supreme Court in his place.
After the Appointments Committee’s report was presented to the House, members of Parliament still have to vote on the nominees for the Supreme Court.
The House has adjourned until further consideration. The Minority’s decision to reject the approval of new ministers and deputy ministers nominated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo prompted the suspension of sittings in order to conduct additional consultations.
Samuel Adibu Asiedu and Barbara Ackah-nominations Yensu’s to the Supreme Court as Justices were previously approved by Parliament.
Induction into office took place in December 2022.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo urged the Appointments Committee of Parliament to fulfill its patriotic obligations by endorsing Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu and Justice George Kingsley Koomson during the swearing-in ceremony.
The swearing-in of two Supreme Court justices, Justices Samuel Kwame Adibo Asiedu and Frances Barbara Ackah-Yensu, who will replace Justices Yaw Apaw and Samuel Marful-Sau, who both passed away on August 10, 2021, and Justice Samuel Marful-Sau, who retired on August 2, 2021, is the most significant act of the administration of the third arm of government.
“I, therefore, await Parliament’s approval of the two remaining nominees; Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu and Justice George Kingsley Koomson to fill the vacancies created by Justice Clemence Honyenuga’s retirement on September 24, 2022, and Justice Agnes Dordzie’s retirement on October 2, 2022,” the statement reads.
