NDC, 4 other political parties sue EC over limited voter registration

Five opposition political parties in Ghana, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC), filed a suit against the Electoral Commission in the Supreme Court today, September 7, in response to the electoral management body’s decision to limit the upcoming limited voter registration exercise to its district offices.
The five parties are the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Convention People’s Party (CPP), the All People’s Congress, the Liberal Party of Ghana, and the Great Consolidated Popular Party.
The parties think that the EC’s decision to limit voter registration centers to district offices will deprive many qualified voters of their right to vote in public elections.
The parties have filed an application for an interlocutory injunction to prevent the EC from carrying out the announced limited voter registration effort until the substantive dispute is resolved.
According to the parties, this is just the beginning of a series of actions they want to take in order to persuade the EC to conduct the upcoming limited voter registration drive at the electoral area level.
From September 12, 2023, through October 2, 2023, limited voter registration will be held for eligible Ghanaians who turned 18 following the 2020 registration period, as well as other eligible voters.
The activity would be held at all 268 EC district offices around the country, according to EC Chairperson Jean Mensa.
