The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is scheduled to choose a flagbearer and parliamentary candidates for the 2024 elections today after months of intense campaigning and days of uncertainty because of legal challenges.
Following the resignation of former Bank of Ghana governor Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, former Kumasi Mayor Kojo Bonsu and former President John Dramani Mahama are vying for the position of flagbearer.
At a news conference on Friday evening, the former minister of finance revealed that his decision was motivated by his complaints about the procedures leading up to the party’s primaries, particularly the voters registration.
He said that numerous anomalies had tarnished the exercise and that the party leadership had failed to address them.
“It is clear to everyone that the party is not prepared to hold a free and fair election, which worries me. Participating in such would be like to purposefully drinking from a calabash that was poisoned. I was forced to withdraw from the presidential race after speaking with my supporters around the country because I am unable to run in an election that is obviously rife with anomalies, despite my best attempts to call attention to them, Dr. Duffuor stated.
Elections are currently being postponed in the Manhyia South seat, but are anticipated to take place in 274 other constituencies on Saturday.
On Saturday, there will be an election with over 366,000 delegates, and 739 candidates are running for office.
In the elections on Saturday, 47 parliamentary candidates are anticipated to face no opposition.
