About 200 children were reportedly trapped in the collapsed Jos school building, according to Plateau Commissioner for Information and Communication Musa Ashoms.
While pupils were completing their third-term exams on Friday, the Saints Academy, a secondary school in Jos, collapsed.
Ashoms estimated that there were around 400 students enrolled in the school when he visited the location with other commissioners, including the commissioner of secondary education.
About 200 children were housed in a portion of the school that collapsed, according to the commissioner.
There have been casualties from the fallen structure, and wounded pupils are currently being taken to hospitals.
However, until the evacuation is over, we are unable to determine the precise number of victims.
“The rescue attempts are being greatly assisted by the emergency personnel.
“Medical staff at the hospitals has been encouraged by Governor Caleb Mutfwang to make sure they preserve the lives of survivors.
“Since this is an emergency, they shouldn’t be requesting money or anything else,” he said.
However, the commissioner said that in order to avoid future tragedies of this kind, the state government’s order 003, which was designed to compel the execution of the Greater Jos Master Plan, was all the more necessary in light of the occurrence.
He said it was obvious that the school building that fell did not adhere to construction regulations since it was constructed in a wet environment.
According to Ashoms, the Jos Metropolitan Development Board will see to it that unsafe structures were demolished and that current projects complied with regulations.
