Parliament will meet again today for urgent business.

Members of Parliament are anticipated in the House today after being called to order by Alban Bagbin, Speaker of the House, for “urgent parliamentary business.”

According to some MPs, the purpose of the recall is to push them to give the government permission to apply for another loan.

On March 31, 2023, the House adjourned after adopting three contentious tax proposals into law. The Nanton Member of Parliament was injured in an accident while traveling to the House to participate in the vote to pass the laws.

On that same evening, the MPs also gave their approval to two additional Supreme Court Justices who had already undergone vetting by the Appointments Committee.

In a statement calling for the lawmakers’ recall, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the speaker of parliament, said: “In exercise of the power conferred on the Speaker by order 42(3) of the Standing Orders of the Parliament of Ghana, I, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, do hereby direct that Parliament shall, notwithstanding anything to the contrary, be recalled from recess to sit on Tuesday, the 2nd day of May 2023, at ten in the forenoon,

Minority dissatisfied with recall of MPs from recess
The minority in parliament is not pleased with the recall right now.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the minority leader, claimed in a tweet that the purpose of the recall is to persuade MPs to support the government’s intention to engage in another borrowing binge.

He criticized the administration for borrowing carelessly in spite of the nation’s current economic problems.
