SLTF-NUGS should be run with a political commitment to the government.

In order to reduce delays in the disbursement of student loans, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) is urging the government to show political commitment to managing the Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF).The student group additionally want government to listen to their appeal for GETFund to be uncapped in order to enable agencies such as the Student Loan Trust Fund obtain the required financial resources to perform on their duty. The Student Loan Trust Fund has been under increasing pressure recently from both NUGS and the University Students Association of Ghana to distribute cash to students after several months of holding them back. For instance, USAG made hints that they intended to use all legal measures, such as picketing and demonstrations, to force through their demand for the payment of student loans.Dennis Appiah Larbi, the president of NUGS, however, claimed in an interview with Citi News that their collaboration with SLTF had produced fruitful results because more than 5,000 students had already received their loans, and the Fund had promised to soon disburse money to students who had not yet received their loans in the second tranche. However, he suggested that the GETFund be uncapped along with a political commitment from the government to address the issue of funding disbursement delays.”We have filed a petition against the GETFund cap. We think that if GETFund is uncapped, it will be possible to facilitate the transfer of cash from the GETFund to the Student Loan. In order to disburse monies to recipients, we will request that the government uncap the GETFund in response to our petition.Dennis Appiah Larbi also urged former student loan recipients to pay back their debts in order to maintain the Fund when delays in government funding for the organization occur.
