Spyro Discloses Bank Loan Struggle to Finance Collaborative Song with Mayorkun and Davido
Nigerian singer Spyro, known by his real name Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, recently opened up about his financial struggles in an interview with Cool FM. The artist revealed that he had obtained a bank loan to finance his collaborative song with popular musicians Mayorkun and Davido, titled “Funke.” Unfortunately, despite the high-profile collaboration, the song failed to meet expectations, leading to a three-year struggle for Spyro to repay the loan.
In 2018, Spyro, an up-and-coming musician at the time, experienced a significant career boost when he joined forces with Mayorkun and Davido on the track “Funke.” The collaboration garnered initial success, propelling Spyro into the public eye. However, the lack of proper structure and support resulted in a decline in his career shortly after the song’s release.
Reflecting on the aftermath, Spyro expressed his concerns, stating, “When I dropped ‘Funke’ and the song popped, I had David [Davido] and I had Mayorkun on the song. And after dropping ‘Funke’ and my career still went down, I’m like, ‘Oh! Am I ever gonna rise again?’” He further explained that he had taken a loan from a bank to finance the recording of “Funke” while he was still signed to Upfront & Personal, his previous label. Following the completion of the song’s promotion period, Spyro faced the challenging task of repaying the loan, which lasted for approximately three years.
Aside from his financial struggles, Spyro recently made headlines for his admiration for fellow Nigerian artist Tiwa Savage. He took to his Instagram page to reveal that he had decided to limit his conversations with Tiwa Savage because he found himself falling more in love with her each time they spoke. The singer expressed gratitude for Savage’s collaboration on the remix of his latest song, indicating the positive impact she has had on his career.
Spyro’s candid revelations shed light on the challenges faced by emerging artists in the music industry, emphasizing the importance of a solid support system and financial stability. Despite his setbacks, Spyro’s determination and passion for his craft continue to drive him forward as he navigates the ever-changing landscape of the Nigerian music scene.
