The University of Ghana is regarded among the best world-class universities, ranking second in West Africa.

The Centre for World Universities Ranking has placed the University of Ghana among the top 6.1% of world-class universities in 2023.

Professor Nana Aba Amfo, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, stated that the University of Ghana has secured its position as the foremost university in Ghana.

She made the announcement at the law school’s 2023 convocation.

Undergraduate students from 46 nations, including China, Canada, and Botswana, were awarded degrees.

They came from the law school, the medical school, and the school of biomedical and allied health sciences at the University of Ghana.

The special congregation is the final group of students to graduate as part of the university’s 75th anniversary celebrations.

The Vice Chancellor declared that the University of Ghana has been ranked among the top 6.1 percent of international universities, cementing the University of Ghana’s current status as the leading premier university in Ghana.

“Gentlemen and ladies, I am pleased to report that the University of Ghana has reached a significant milestone by ranking among the top 6.1% of world-class universities in the 2023 edition of the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) Global 2000 List. This remarkable recognition cements the University’s position as Ghana’s preeminent institution.

The rigorous assessment process used by the CWUR evaluated 20,531 universities globally, with only the top 2000 reaching the Global 2000 list. The rankings were determined using seven objective measures spread across four categories: education quality, alumni employment, faculty quality, and research performance.

The University of Ghana took first place in Ghana with a score of 69.1. “The University of Ghana’s outstanding performance has positioned it as the second-best university in West Africa,” she remarked.

In terms of new campuses, the Vice Chancellor stated that the University Council has approved the restoration of the Accra City Campus to a semi-autonomous institution of the University.

“The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission has approved the establishment of the University’s Takoradi and Kumasi City Campuses, and accreditation processes are nearly complete for the campuses to begin admitting students in the coming academic year.” The new campuses will extend the UG brand and standards to the Ashanti and Western areas, as well as open up more seats for undergraduate student enrollment.”

Nana Adjoa Hackman, a guest speaker and co-founder of Africa Legal Associates, stated that the revolution of artificial intelligence places additional pressure on lawyers to be more imaginative.

She challenged the law students to be adaptable and strategic, as well as to seize the opportunity provided by the recently founded Africa Inter Continental Free Trade Agreement (AFCFTA).
