Over 200,000 New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates are voting today in all 275 constituencies around the country to select a presidential candidate to represent the party in the 2024 general elections.
Ten people expressed their intention to represent the party, including a current MP, the Vice President, former ministers, and MPs, but were reduced to five by an August 26 Super Delegates Conference.
Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia received 629 votes, accounting for 68.15 percent of the total votes cast in the Super Delegates Conference, to emerge as the winner, with Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, coming in second and former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen coming in third.
Not happy with the conclusion of the Super Delegates Conference and raising concerns about unfair treatment from the NPP leadership, Alan Kyerematen withdrew from the party to join the Movement for Change and run as an independent candidate in the 2024 general elections.
To acquire the fifth candidate, a tie between Boakye Agyarko and Francis Addai-Nimoh was required, but the former backed out of a September 2 run-off.
A total of 203,439 delegates are slated to vote in the election, with 436 delegates voting at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra.
The Ashanti Region will have 34,987 delegates vote, while the Ahafo Region will have 4,204 delegates vote. In the Greater Accra Region, 39,134 delegates will vote. Volta has 11,995 delegate numbers.
Voting centers have also been established in each of the country’s 275 constituencies.
Today’s election pits Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, MP for Assin Central, against Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, and Francis Addai-Nimoh, MP for Mampong.
To avoid resignations as a result of the election, all four candidates signed an agreement on Thursday, October 2, not to resign from the party if any of them loses the primary.
