President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated that Ghana has effectively weathered the storms of difficult economic times.
“If we are to take pride in being Ghanaians, we must reach an agreement on the values we hold dear and pass them down to future generations,” President Akufo-Addo stated, underlining the significance of conserving and passing on treasured national values.
During his 67th Independence address in Koforidua, Eastern region, the President acknowledged the nation’s economic hardships, saying, “Fellow Ghanaians, I know that we have gone through difficult economic circumstances, but it is clear that we have overcome the worst, and we should be looking forward to better times.
President Akufo-Addo also offered a warning about the dangers of unlimited free expression, while acknowledging its critical role in a functioning democracy.
The President emphasized the need of learning from both triumphs and problems, as well as the need for greater tolerance of differing viewpoints in Ghana ahead of the December elections.
“We still have a lot to learn, especially about tolerance for conflicting perspectives. However, we also understand that we must not relapse, since there are several examples of countries that have devolved into chaos as a result of disputed elections.
Recognizing technology’s revolutionary role in increasing openness in the democratic process, the President also highlighted the risks connected with the manipulation and distribution of incorrect information.
He recognized technology’s dual character, serving as a valuable instrument but also challenging the integrity of public opinion.
President Akufo-Addo expressed satisfaction with progress made in terms of free expression and a healthy media environment, both of which are essential components of a functioning democracy.
He remarked, “When it comes to free speech and a strong media as indications of a functioning democracy, I feel we are doing well. Even if we still have work to do to improve the quality of public discourse, there is no threat that dissenting voices will be silenced on any subject.
